A Swing and a Hit Along West Capitol Ave

A Swing and a Hit Along West Capitol Ave

As part of West Sacramento's redevelopment project, standing tall along the east end of the newly landscaped West Capitol Avenue, between City Hall and the Civic Center, cast your eyes on a pair of giant bronze sculptures.  A pitcher and a batter, both complimenting nearby Raley Field.  City proud and winning!

Job Seekers and Meals on Wheels

Job Seekers and Meals on Wheels

Active Job Seekers of America (AJSA) will be volunteering at Meals on Wheels this Wednesday. Last month over 15 Active Job Seekers from Auburn, Folsom, & Roseville groups helped prepare meals for seniors in the Greater Sacramento Area. We prepared over 100 frozen meals. Assembled 540 weekly meal boxes that consisted of 5 frozen meals, milk, juice boxes, fruit cups, and bread! Packaged indivual bread slices. It was a fun morning and it felt great to give back!

We are going to exceed the 540 boxes this week!

Do you know why they call it Five Points?

Do you know why they call it Five Points?

Things change, but sometimes the names don't.   For example, the Five Points Shopping Center is named for the location it is at in Carmichael, Five Points.  But what is "Five Points"?   Well, the name comes from the fact that there used to be a a 5 street intersection  there.  Today, Arden Way and  Fair Oaks Boulevard intersect there.  2 streets, going 2 directions intersect, so it is a 4 way intersection.  But Walnut Avenue didn't used to veer east into Fair Oaks Boulevard next to Raley's.  Walnut Avenue used to go straight south into Arden Way at Fair Oaks Boulevard, right through where Arden Fair Cleaners, and the Goodwill Store are today.   I suspect the change was made because 5 way intersections are a headache to put traffic lights in at. I don't know what year the change was made, but I suspect it was in the 1970's.   I

Eve's Market is gone, will anyone every move in?

Eve's Market is gone, will anyone every move in?

It's been over 2 years now since Eve's Market at Marconi and Walnut closed, and there's no sign of any new tenant moving into the building.  Some fans of Nugget Market have said they'd love to see that retailer move in, but so far, the "Available" sign remains over the boarded up entrance.   It's surprising to me that so many grocery stores have been in this location.  Marconi Avenue both east and west of Walnut Avenue is lined with apartments.  You'd think having a grocery store so close to so many people would generate brisk business, but apparently not.  When I first moved to Carmichael nearly 30 years ago, the location was occupied by a Ralph's Supermarket.  The Southern California chain's Northern California stores  really struggled.  So much so Ralphs pulled out of Northern California.  Albertson's took over the location, and may very well have been the longest tenant in the building to date.  But then Albertson's sca
